Levern Brown

Deacon Levern “Jim” Brown was born November 29, 1952, in Darlington, SC, to the late Willie and Lizzie Brown. He peacefully entered eternal rest in the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence, SC, with his wife by his side. Jim grew up on his parents’ farm in Darlington and was educated in the Darlington County Public School System. He graduated from Mayo High School in Darlington, SC, in the class of 1971. On December 21, 1974, he married his wife, Rebecca, and to this blessed union was born three children: a daughter, Tamara, and twin boys, Samuel and Emanuel. Jim worked for over 35 years for ESAB in Florence, SC. Upon his retirement from ESAB, he continued employment for the state of South Carolina Department of Transportation. “Deac,” as he was affectionately called, was a dedicated and lifelong member of Mt Carmel Baptist Church in Timmonsville, SC, where he served as a deacon for 30 years and was a member of the Men’s Chorus, Gospel Choir, Mixed Choir, and the Maggie Lyde Choir. He was an active Sunday School teacher for many years until his recent illness, and he loved the Lord with all his heart. Jim loved to fish, sing in the church, watch football, work the land, laugh with friends, and serve his community with unwavering support and commitment. He could be commonly seen driving about Timmonsville and Florence in his truck and was always ready with a wave hello or a listening ear. He was both a rock and a soft place to his wife, children, family, and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Left to cherish Jim’s memory is Rebecca, his wife of 49 years, 5 months, and 5 days and who he affectionately called “Beulah”; his daughter, Tamara Brown of the home; son, Emanuel Brown of Florence, SC; sister, Hattie (the late Raleigh) Jett, of Florence, SC; a special niece with whom he was raised as a sister, Hallistine (Lloyd) Mitchell of Darlington, SC; in-laws: Clayton (Carriedder) King of Timmonsville, SC, Janice King of Savannah Grove, SC, and Patricia King of Timmonsville, SC; five grandsons: Emanuel Khaire, Evan Kyler, Samuel Alexander, Benjamin Zachriah, and Lyndon Anthony, who he reared in the home; one daughter-in-law, Sue Brown of Severn, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Lizzie Brown; one brother, Joe Brown; one sister, Mamie Hickman; and a son, Samuel Brown.
